The idea of enterprise within education is sometimes misunderstood. It is often thought that enterprise is about creating the next teenage business tycoon – the next Alan Sugar! It is important to note that enterprise education is a much more inclusive and empowering approach for all in education.
Enterprising education is about the development of enterprising skills and qualities. These include things like a can do attitude, thinking of new ideas, being creative and judging risks etc. The essence of enterprise education is personal development. It is learning that enriches the self-image of young people and raises achievement in a wide range of social and educational contexts.
It has at its heart an understanding that these skills and qualities are transferable to different areas of life and that these will enrich both the individual and society. Examples of situations where enterprising approaches may help include setting up a business or club, becoming a community entrepreneur, planning a gap year, forming a band etc.
These skills and qualities are difficult to nurture in 'traditional' lessons. In the same way, that a sports-person or musician will practice their technique. An enterprise ‘player’ needs to practice in real situations. Only then will the player will improve and fulfil their potential. These opportunities need to be as realistic as possible, giving the young people the responsibility for their own project. The possibility of success or failure is very motivating and provide equal opportunities for learning.
We can design and manage projects and resources to address specific problems or issues. Our aim is to encourage enterprising thinking that will stimulate and inspire.
