A group of teenage parents in North Tyneside discussed and agreed important family values. The parents concluded that the most important values to develop within the family are:
RESPECT, HEALTH, SELF DISCIPLINE, COMMITMENT, LOVE, PLAYFUL, LEARNING, COOPERATION, CONTRIBUTING, FLEXIBILITY, KINDNESS, EMPATHY, TRUTH, LOYALTY AND DETERMINATION
The parents considered their role as educators and how everything that they say and do can affect the development of values within the home. Each family then selected one value to explore in depth and discuss what family members would be saying and doing if this value was honoured. This created a rich dialogue about values education in the home. Parents then reflected upon this discussion and identified kinds of behaviour that could make a positive difference.
The group agreed that this thinking was important and each individual created positive affirmations to help deepen family values. A few examples include -
“I love reading to my child in the evening”
“I enjoy getting up early in the morning”
“I love playing with my son”
Examples of small changes that can make a profound difference.
