Values determine people’s aspirations and behaviour in life. For this reason, the development of knowledge and awareness about values should be one of the most important parts of the learning process. We design resources and deliver training that help individuals and organisations to work with values. This helps people to articulate appropriate values frameworks and better understand any associated behaviours. We have many case studies that show positive results in schools, families, organisations and for individuals.
Our work supports people to
Define their personal values
Explore how values affect how people live
Explore a wide range of different values for different situations in life
Consider the practical implications of using values in relation to themselves and, others, the community, and the world at large;
Inspire individuals to choose their own values and be aware of practical methods for developing and deepening them; and
Encourage educators to look at education as providing students with a philosophy of living, facilitating their overall growth, development and choices.

Ray Baxter has recently been commissioned by Routledge Publishing to write The Secondary School Handbook for Values Education. This handbook will provide a straight forward way for schools to work with values. It will provide practical and effective ideas for a values based approach for whole school leadership, management and classroom practice. This will include ideas for staff induction, professional development, developing positive values in the staffroom and classroom.We are presently looking for interesting case studies, so should you have any thoughts then it would be great to hear from you.
Recent projects include:
• Family Values – a project involving teenage parents exploring the development of positive values in young families.
• Partnership Values – a project coordinated by the Voluntary Organisation Development Agency. This project involved different agencies agreeing a framework of values and behaviours needed for effective partnership work.
• Working with Values. These training events support a wide range of school based educators to design and deliver programmes of values education. This work is equally valid for the staffroom and the classroom.
• Values for dialogue. The year 2008 was the year of International Dialogue. Turning Tides coordinated a project in the North East of England that worked in partnership with 1000 other projects across 37 countries. These projects aimed to develop an awareness and understanding between the citizens of the European Union countries. Our project involved a group of young people from North East of England who organised an evening of dialogue about issues from Palestine, Turkey, Egypt, Germany and the UK. This evening was not about judging or making decisions, but about understanding and learning. Before the event a group of young people discussed and agreed the shared values/behaviours needed for effective dialogue. They then selected you-tube clips that represented cultural issues from the countries selected. During the evening event, friends and the local community were invited to join the dialogue and you-tube clips provided the stimulus for dialogue.
This project was used as the UK case study in The Anna Lindh Foundation publication for 1001 actions.
